2010 World Cup in South Africa

As the world awaits the Fifa World Cup 2010 with bated breath, none could be more excited than the host nation, South Africa. With this being the first FIFA World Cup that would be held in an African nation, it’s actually the whole continent which hopes for a stupendous performance from the South Africans. In what had been an all African bidding process, South Africa had won the rights for the most coveted international tournament in the world from Morocco and Egypt. The tournament as has been expected has been generating a lot of hype and people from all over the world are pouring into the African nation to get a glimpse of the present day legends of football.

On its part, South Africa, too has left no stone unturned in making this Cup an event to remember for times to come. There has been the construction of five new stadiums especially for the purpose of the competition. Apart from this, there are five other existing venues which would be upgraded and the cost for all the ten stadiums stands at a staggering figure of 48 billion Rouble. In addition to the stadiums, the country has been trying to improve its notorious public transport system as well which has been known to be conspicuous. Some of the steps in this direction include the Gautrain and the Bus Rapid Transit System.

Although the Copa de Mundo is going to showcase some of the best in the world of football, there would be some of the biggies who would be missing the show due to injuries. Some of the names that are expected to brighten up the tournament with their presence and eclectic and blazing performances include Brazil’s Kaka, Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard, Andrea Pirlo and the latest sensation Cristiano Ronaldo.

England Manager Capello Drops Legend Beckham in TV Fumble

In a dark moment for English football, one of the sports greatest icons was dismissed and humiliated in a passing comment by his national manager. In a TV interview before a friendly match against Hungary, the Italian was asked about David Beckham’s future in the squad.

The Italian market an end to sporting hero’s international career with a single offhand comment; “Thank you for helping me during the World Cup, but probably (Beckham is) a little bit old,” He said.

David Beckham’s career took an upsetting turn earlier in the year when an untimely ankle injury caused him to miss out on what was widely considered his last shot at world cup glory. Wayne Mark Rooney is the brilliant young striker of Manchester United. He is also the regular starting Centre forward for England Soccer national team. He is now assisted by Carloz Tevez and Lois Saha. He had a poor start to this season when he broke his ankle in the first premiership match of this season. He got injured against Portsmouth. He was sidelined for 3 months. But he made his return well within expected time.
